University of Pisa (UNIPI) accounts for 50.000 enrolled students and 3000 staff. The Department of Agriculture, Food and Agri-environmental Science (DAFE) is a research and teaching centre, and it is born trough the merging of the three department of the faculty of agriculture. The DAFE oversees 4 different university courses, one Doctoral School, and the research activities are concerning agricultural and environmental economy, rural sociology, agronomy, agricultural science, botany, genetics, food science, rural engineering and rural building, livestock science, plant protection and agronomy. Pisa Agricultural Economics (PAGE) group of DAFE, has a long-standing experience in the research on sustainable rural development. It has a distinguished position in the scientific Italian landscape for its interdisciplinary approach, which has opened agricultural economics to social studies and to issues related to the agro-environment and policy evaluation. The members of research unit have experience in participation to EU project about, among others, innovation, and innovation policy in agriculture and rural areas; socio-economic impact of digitization; sustainable transition of agri-food systems, including livestock. Researchers in the PAGE group are also part of the Start for Future program (https://startforfuture.eu/) an academia, startups, industry and public organisations alliance committed to fostering systemic innovation in Europe through supporting talents, startups/spin off creation and Quadruple Helix co-creation across Europe.
